Minutes 7/28/19

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 7/28/2019 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on Caring for Others.  We heard of the challenge of treating people how they want to be treated based on their culture or life experience.  We heard that acceptance of differences is perhaps too low a bar.  We heard of the importance of treating people equally and as individuals, not based on their status.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report for the month (attached).  We accepted the report.

We heard that the first reading for nomination for Treasurer will take place next month.

We decided to use the facilities of Takoma Park Presbyterian Church for meeting for worship on a three-week trial run basis on September 1, 15 and 22.  We authorized the Treasurer to use the meeting place fund to pay for the trial period if needed.

We heard and approved these minutes.  We adjourned, to gather next on 8/25/2019 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

Minutes 6/23/2019

6/23/2019 minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 6/23/2019 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on Home and Family.  We heard that these queries as formulated may not correspond with each of our living situations, but this is recognized in the further text.  We heard about the concept of accountability, the arising of anger, and the opportunity for dealing with anger by separation.

We considered gifts to Quaker and community groups.  We decided to reduce our gifts this year given a tight budget, and to support William Penn House and Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform at $200 each.  We expect to support more organizations next year, assuming that contributions materialize.

We heard and approved these minutes.  We adjourned, to gather next on 7/28/2019 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 5/26/2019 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.
We heard queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on personal way of life. We heard that seeking employment consistent with beliefs is not as straightforward as the idea may seem, but that service to society can be a useful guide. Avoiding being ruled by possessions can also be an almost impossible standard. A balance might be found in the queries directed to reaching Divinely given potential.
Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report for the month (attached). We accepted the report.
We decided that the $40 fee level for the Takoma Park Folk Festival (no solicitation of donations) is appropriate.
We decided to defer contributions to both Quaker and non-Quaker groups to 2020, given our cash shortfall in contributions, but to make a $200 contribution to one group each category.
We heard and approved these minutes. We adjourned, to gather next on 6/23/2019 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

4/28/2019 minutes

4/28/2019 minutes
Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 4/28/2019 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.
We heard queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on personal spiritual life. We heard about George Fox’s revelation that Christ can speak to his condition, and that Christ can come as a teacher. What about Christ as healer? The Christ who showed up for Fox was the one who could meet Fox’s need; he can also offer healing if that is what we need. We also heard that worship involves listening to God.
Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report for the month (attached). Donations are lagging behind. We accepted the report.
The spiritual state of the meeting report has been passed on to Adelphi Friends Meeting.
We discussed support for Quaker groups and decided to do further research on the possibility of adding a new group to the list (prisoner visitation and support project of Patapsco Friends meeting).
Celebrate Takoma is held at Piney Branch Elementary School on May 18. There is no cost. We will apply for a space.
We visited Rhizome; the space could be available, but accessibility is poor, so we decided not to pursue this option. We will continue to explore other locations (Electric Maid, Takoma Park Presbyterian, and others).
We will consider further ideas for the timing of our meeting for worship.
We heard and approved these minutes. We adjourned, to gather next on 5/26/2019 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

3/24/2019 Minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 3/24/2019 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.
We heard queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on the meeting community. We heard that it was difficult to us to arrange visitation for each other given our small size. On the other hand our small size does enable us to get to know each other member of the meeting. We heard that open sharing calls for each of us to identify our needs.
Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report for the month (attached). We discussed the limitations of cash accounting. Our Treasurer will contact the Yearly Meeting about accounting for pledges. We accepted the report.
Half-page flyers about this meeting are now available.
Adelphi Friends Meeting has made a sign up sheet available for visitors to this meeting.
We approved the draft spiritual state of the meeting report with changes, for forwarding to Adelphi Friends Meeting.
We heard and approved these minutes. We adjourned, to gather next on 4/28/2019 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

1/27/2019 Minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 1/27/2019 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on meetings for worship.  We discussed spoken ministry and how to discern whether a message is from the Spirit.  We heard of the difficulty of sensing where other members of the meeting are spiritually in their silent worship. We also heard about preparation for meeting for worship and arriving on time and unrushed.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report for the month (attached).  We accepted the report.

We discussed preparation of a spiritual state of the meeting report.  We noted that to submit the report in time, a second reading is needed in March and a first reading in February. We agreed to use next month’s second hour to discuss the queries for the spiritual state of the meeting report.  We asked the recording clerk to facilitate distribution of queries to prepare for that meeting.

We continued discussing the wording of a flyer about the Meeting to be posted on bulletin boards and in businesses and agreed to consider the final wording next month.

We discussed how to welcome newcomers, based on material from FGC.  We decided we did not need to order this material.

We heard and approved these minutes.  We adjourned, to gather next on 2/24/2019 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 12/16/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries and advices from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on the environment.  We heard of concerns on global warming, hope that many are taking action, and wondering what each of us should do in our own lives and to encourage others.  We heard of the spiritual dimension of the environment.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the year-end treasurer’s report and year-to-date report (attached).  Contributions sufficed for us to make budgeted contributions to organizations for FY 2018.  We accepted the reports.

11/25/2018 Minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 11/25/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries and advices from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on education.  We heard of the benefits of inclusiveness in studying religious texts; of support for public education, especially quality education at no charge; and of the harm caused by bullying.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report (attached).  We accepted the report.  Tricia also reported approval of our FY 2019 budget by Adelphi Friends Meeting and approval of her position as Takoma Park Treasurer (and assistant Treasurer of AFM).

A flyer about the Meeting to be posted on bulletin boards and in businesses was presented for a first reading.

We will approach the owners of the Montessori school on Carrol Avenue to indicate a monthly rental that we could consider, and are also in touch with the Bridge Hut.

A first reading of nominations for 2019 was presented, with the festival coordinator position still needing to be filled.

We agreed on 1/6/2019 as the date for a holiday gathering, at the rise of meeting.

We agreed to take the following steps to grow our Meeting:

  1. Revise the website, with a focus on making it more inviting to newcomers.
  2. Develop a plan for welcoming newcomers, to be brought back to a subsequent business meeting.
  3. Arrange a talk at Historic Takoma.

Minutes 9/23/2018

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 9/23/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries and advices from the 2013 draft Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on listening.  We heard that it was telling that the query involved listening rather than reading, involving the power of the spoken word.  Listening involves attention.  It can be difficult, especially in a distracting environment.  Being attentive to nature can change us and help us appreciate that there is something greater than us.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report.  We accepted the report.

We had a first reading of the budget for 2019.  We are aiming for a balanced budget for the second reading.

We approved Tricia Crocker to serve as Treasurer, and Assistant Treasurer of Adelphi Friends Meeting ex officio, for 12/1/2018 through 11/30/2019.

We approved gifts of $150 each to the following Quaker and community groups for the current budget year.

Friends Committee on National Legislation

Friends General Conference

Friends Peace Teams (earmark: African Great Lakes Initiative)

Right Sharing of World Resources

William Penn House

CASA de Maryland

Dance Exchange

Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform

Scholar Chips

Shepherd’s Table

Village of Takoma Park (earmark: parents of special needs adults project)

Action in Montgomery.

We agreed to make $100 of the contributions to Scholarchips, CASA de Maryland, and Action in Montgomery conditional on sufficient donations being received.

We heard and approved these minutes.  We adjourned, to gather next on 10/28/2018 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.
