11/25/2018 Minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 11/25/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries and advices from Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on education.  We heard of the benefits of inclusiveness in studying religious texts; of support for public education, especially quality education at no charge; and of the harm caused by bullying.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report (attached).  We accepted the report.  Tricia also reported approval of our FY 2019 budget by Adelphi Friends Meeting and approval of her position as Takoma Park Treasurer (and assistant Treasurer of AFM).

A flyer about the Meeting to be posted on bulletin boards and in businesses was presented for a first reading.

We will approach the owners of the Montessori school on Carrol Avenue to indicate a monthly rental that we could consider, and are also in touch with the Bridge Hut.

A first reading of nominations for 2019 was presented, with the festival coordinator position still needing to be filled.

We agreed on 1/6/2019 as the date for a holiday gathering, at the rise of meeting.

We agreed to take the following steps to grow our Meeting:

  1. Revise the website, with a focus on making it more inviting to newcomers.
  2. Develop a plan for welcoming newcomers, to be brought back to a subsequent business meeting.
  3. Arrange a talk at Historic Takoma.

We heard and approved these minutes.  We adjourned, to gather next on 12/16/2018 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

10/28/2018 minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 10/28/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland. We heard queries and advices from the 2013 draft Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on listening. We heard of the aggravation of being one-on-one with a person who feels the need to dominate conversations; one way that may work is to limit the time spent with such people. We heard of the disappointment of listening to people who talk a great deal but do little. We heard a sense that there’s an understandable reluctance to talk about listening. We heard a sense that reading can sometimes be more effective than listening; books can be life-changing things. We heard of how the challenges we face can influence which podcasts we listen to; we can be aware of how our perceptions influence who we listen to and step outside our areas of comfort. We heard of “bliks,” statements made that no evidence can contradict, regardless of how unbelievable they seem.

Minutes 9/23/2018

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 9/23/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.

We heard queries and advices from the 2013 draft Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on listening.  We heard that it was telling that the query involved listening rather than reading, involving the power of the spoken word.  Listening involves attention.  It can be difficult, especially in a distracting environment.  Being attentive to nature can change us and help us appreciate that there is something greater than us.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report.  We accepted the report.

We had a first reading of the budget for 2019.  We are aiming for a balanced budget for the second reading.

We approved Tricia Crocker to serve as Treasurer, and Assistant Treasurer of Adelphi Friends Meeting ex officio, for 12/1/2018 through 11/30/2019.

We approved gifts of $150 each to the following Quaker and community groups for the current budget year.

Friends Committee on National Legislation

Friends General Conference

Friends Peace Teams (earmark: African Great Lakes Initiative)

Right Sharing of World Resources

William Penn House

CASA de Maryland

Dance Exchange

Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform

Scholar Chips

Shepherd’s Table

Village of Takoma Park (earmark: parents of special needs adults project)

Action in Montgomery.

We agreed to make $100 of the contributions to Scholarchips, CASA de Maryland, and Action in Montgomery conditional on sufficient donations being received.

We heard and approved these minutes.  We adjourned, to gather next on 10/28/2018 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

9/9/2018 Minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 9/9/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland.
We heard queries and advices from the 2013 draft Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on integrity, concerning truth and how we live according to truth. We heard that calling others out when they act hurtfully can be part of living according to truth. We heard that truth can use our help in these times. We heard that truth involves what we do, fixing mistakes we make.

We approved minutes from our July 22, 2018, meeting with edits. The minutes will be posted as revised.

Tricia Crocker, treasurer, handed out copies of the treasurer’s report. There is a donations gap of close to $600 for the current year that needs to be filled. We accepted the report.

There are four readings for service as Treasurer, to be presented at Adelphi and Takoma Park. The first reading would be for Tricia Crocker to serve through 11/30/2019.

We considered gifts to Quaker and community groups involving 10 percent of our operating budget to each category, respectively. As a first reading, the amount suggested for community groups was $150 each for the five groups we supported last year, plus two additional groups: Action in Montgomery, and the Dance Exchange. For Quaker groups, the amount would be $150 each for each of the groups supported last year.

We heard a progress report on site search, which is ongoing. We agreed to devote the 10/21 second hour to a discussion on steps we might take to encourage growth of the meeting.

We heard and approved these minutes. We adjourned, to gather next on 9/23/2018 at the rise of meeting, or at the call of the presiding clerk.

6/24/2018 minutes

Takoma Park Friends Meeting-Preparative gathered on 6/24/2018 at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, Maryland. We heard queries and advices from the 2013 draft Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice on equality. We heard appreciation for the meeting’s gifts to Parents of Special Needs Adults. We heard of the tension between being competitive and compromising. We heard regret for society’s focus on the rich and famous, with the good works of the poor covered as an afterthought. We heard of the social value of taking part in continuing education, which provides an opportunity for people of different backgrounds to mix. We heard of how racial equity is an enormous issue, and of the danger of trying to deal with it with small responses. We heard of how speaking in positive terms of those who are different applies to those who simply have opinions different from our own, especially when those others may have poor opinions of us. We heard of how stands that we disagree with may be understandable when we learn the reasons for them.
